Dogs are protective creatures who love looking after the people and animals they call their family. German Shepherds in particular are known for being great guard dogs. And it turns out, German Shepherds don’t just guard their puppies and their owners. They’ll also guard other animals that they feel are their family.
This video of a German Shepherd guarding a newborn pygmy goat is a great example of this!
The German Shepherd, Shadow, absolutely loves this adorable little goat. She lets the goat sleep next to her, and she cuddles with him.
In the description of the video, the person who took the video describes what it was like to introduce the two animals:
“Introducing two animals of different kingdoms can present itself to be quite the challenge, but if performed properly and carefully, it can be a very rewarding experience. Most of the times, people think of how are they going to introduce their adult cat to a puppy, or vice versa. But this family had a very unique opportunity – they introduced their pet white Shepherd dog to a baby goat! The aftermath is worth the effort!”
Shadow had puppies once before, but now she’s spayed. Her owner thinks that Shadow took to the little goat because she missed cuddling with puppies of her own.
The goat also feels a strong connection to Shadow. In the video, his owner says:
“For some reason the goat thinks Shadow is his mommy, and Shadow likes the goat.”
Shadow often licks the goat. This is something that many dogs do with their young puppies.
Mama dogs lick their puppies to show affection. They also do it to learn the smell of their new puppies. By licking the little goat, Shadow shows that she truly thinks of the goat as one of her own babies!
The pygmy goat isn’t the only little animal Shadow has taken under her wing. She also loves cuddling with her owner’s smaller dog. It seems like Shadow has some amazing maternal instincts!
Shadow is doing a great job looking after her little adopted pygmy goat—she’s an amazing protector! If you want to see the adorable pair in action, check out the video below.
