Any dog owner can tell you that dogs always want to be involved. It doesn’t matter whether you’re cooking, watching television, or using the bathroom, Rex is right there behind you, eagerly wagging his tail, ready to partake in the next adventure.
For dogs, not being included for even a few seconds is practically torture in their minds— and they all have different ways of dealing with it. Some dogs pace, others fidget while some go crazy and destroy the house— but Fern’s method? Hers seems to be the most effective.
Meet Fern!
Roughly four years ago, the 18-month-old puppy went viral for the way she expressed her displeasure at being left behind in the car by her dad.
According to reports, Fern and her owners Graham and Fiona Haddow had been out shopping all day, and the dog was having a blast. At one point, however, her parents had to stop at the art gallery and Fern wasn’t allowed to go in.
When Fern saw her parents go into the Dundee, Scottland, gallery without her, she knew she had to take matters into her own hands (err.. paws). So, the dog came up with a solution that instantly went viral.
Planting herself in the front seat and lifting her right paw, Fern proceeded to honk Graham’s car horn for the next fifteen minutes.
Passers-by, who initially thought the driver of the car may have had a medical emergency, completely burst out laughing as they approached and saw Fern in the front seat. Pulling out their cellphones, they couldn’t help but capture the scene.
“I came out of the gallery and looked down the street about a hundred yards away and saw a crowd gathered around a car and heard a honking sound,” recalled Graham.
“Then I did a double-take and realized that it was my car, and I wondered if it was anything to do with the dog.”
Immediately fearing something had happened to Fern, Graham rushed over to the crowd. “I started running because I was worried something had happened to her,” he said. “When I got closer, I realized people were pointing and laughing and taking pictures.”
“She was sitting there, casually honking the horn.”
As if the honking wasn’t enough, Fern also found another way to express her displeasure. “Usually when Fern sees me, she stands up and gets excited with her tail wagging,” Graham said. “This time, she just gave me a sideways glance and kept on honking the horn.”
Fiona, his wife, added:
“It was as if she [Fern] was saying, ‘Where have you been? I’ve been waiting.'”
When footage of Fern’s little tantrum was uploaded, the boxer immediately went viral. People couldn’t stop laughing at her human-like reactions— not to mention, her incredible sass.
Recently, another dog was captured taking Fern’s approach.
The incident occurred last year in Nanaimo, Canada. The uploader described the scene: “My husband was leaving the pool and heard a really loud and continuous car horn coming from the parking lot…”
