Everyone knows the old saying that dogs are man’s best friend.

When we adopt these animals, we take them in our homes and treat them like they were our family members. They form close bonds with us and treat us with love and loyalty. Although these lifelong friendships are something to cherish, it’s tragic when we have to say goodbye to our pets. That was the case for one family who lost both their beloved pets in one weekend.

Still, what happened next touched their hearts.

The story originated from a Facebook post written by Laura Waltenburg.

In it, she describes some of her family members who owned two dogs:

“My sister and brother-in-law tragically lost both of their dogs this past weekend. After this happened, they received two 40-pound bags of dog food that they had ordered from the Chewy company. My brother-in-law sent them an email requesting permission to send the dog food back for a refund, minus the shipping cost.”

What began as a reasonable request became an opportunity for empathy and connection.

The company, Chewy, not only accepted the family’s offer—they did them one better.

The post continues:

“They responded with unbelievable kindness! They credited their credit card for the full purchase price; and asked them to donate the dog food to a local shelter. They sent a second email requesting a picture of one of the dogs to put in their memorial book, to honor her. And then today, my sister and brother-in-law received these beautiful flowers from Chewy. I wish I could tell everybody this story… This is an incredible company!”

Although dealing with the death of a pet is tough, this story shows that it is also an opportunity for empathy and appreciation.

Death is something that affects everyone on the planet, though we don’t often consider the additional hassles and complications that go along with the emotional pain. In those trying situations, anytime someone can help make life a little easier or offer a kind word is worth respecting.

Our condolences go out to the family—and a special salute to Chewy for their kindness.
