Unfortunately, it seems many people think it is okay to give their partners ultimatums about getting rid of their pets. These incidences should be treated as relationship red flags to let anyone know they are with the wrong person. Here are 40 times people chose their pets over their partners and what happened after they did.
The last straw
The story here is about how one person’s love for their dog helped them leave an abusive relationship. This is pretty beautiful when you think about it. They both helped the other escape a dangerous situation.
Sorry guy, you are not more important than my cat
If you’ve only been dating someone for a month, you are not more important than the cat they have been with for 14 years. Below is a story about one person who had to inform their partner about how this works.
If you hurt my dog we are done
If you want to know what kind of a person someone really is, pay attention to how they treat animals. The below story is an example of this:
The in-laws can’t dictate what pets you keep
The responsible rat owner from the story below was not about to part with his companion just because the in-laws said he should. It might not be a bad idea to get rid of the in-laws, however.
Dog dictates relationships
This person allows their pet to dictate their relationships. In the end, it makes far more sense to be with someone who your pet gets along with.
Try to kick my dog and it’s over!
If your partner doesn’t like your pet, then they don’t like the “full you.” Adopting a pet is part of who you are and if they can’t deal with that, then they can’t deal with you.
Stay in your lane…or get off the road altogether
If someone you just began seeing starts to complain about your dog, that’s a pretty big red flag. The person below was still nice enough to make her breakfast, however.
Do these ultimatums ever work?
It seems there are plenty of people who feel it is perfectly reasonable to tell someone to get rid of their pet. It’s not. That’s not an okay thing to do to someone or their pet.
This person dodged a bullet
Here is another example of a person getting out of what surely would have been a disastrous relationship by choosing their pet over partner.
Have them meet your pet beforehand
The person in the below story learned that it’s best to have someone you are dating meet your pet early on. If they don’t get along with each other, then the relationship likely won’t work, so why waste your time?
We’ll give you this dog if you dump your boyfriend
This story is unique in that instead of a partner giving an ultimatum, it was actually this person’s parents who bribed them with a new dog to break up with their partner. We think they made the right choice.
This guy didn’t realize how good he had it
In the below story, a guy had everything he could ever want and he blew it all by not being nice to his partner’s dogs.
This partner got very angry when things didn’t go her way
The shock and surprise some of these people who give their partners ultimatums about getting rid of their pets is astounding. Do they not understand that pet owners love their pets???
If they really like you, they will also like your pet
Just because someone isn’t an animal-lover at first, doesn’t mean they won’t become one once they meet your pet. The person from the below story eventually met the right person, but only after going on a date with the wrong person first.
He came to the right decision in the end
The person in the story below was about to surrender their cat to a shelter when they realized they just couldn’t do it. How good of a relationship could it possibly be if they are willing to do this to you and your pet?
Came back the next day to get the dog
This person actually did give up their pet…for a day. Then they came back to collect the dog, bring them home where they belong, and kick the girlfriend out.
My cat will outlive this relationship
The cat-lover in the above post had a real mic-drop of a line to their partner. If the exact phrase “My cat will outlive this relationship” was put on a t-shirt, we know a few people who would buy it.
Breeding tarantulas can be problematic for dating purposes
This person breeds tarantulas, which some potential partners might not be that comfortable with. She was upfront about everything, however, so the guy had no reason to complain. We’re sure there is another spider-loving guy out there for “CrazySnekGirl”
Butters is a very lucky cat
This person’s partner actually threatened to take their cat to the Humane Society while she was out of the house. At that point, there is no other thing to do but to kick your partner out.
“I’ll convince you to choose me over your cats”
If you are a cat person, you need to be with someone who respects that about you. It sounds like the person below eventually found true love.
A close call
If your partner even thinks about doing something like this, not only are they not the one, they are truly terrible people and shouldn’t be with anyone at all!
This is what a good partner who doesn’t like cats would do
If you don’t like cats (for whatever ridiculous reason) but your partner does, you need to respect that about them. Someone willing to learn about cat behavior and grow to appreciate cats for their significant other is a good partner.
Let your partner know early on where they stand
The person in this story made sure their partner knew there would be no ultimatums given in their relationship. Their partner adjusted and now seems to love cats!
Sometimes people don’t know they are dog lovers
For whatever reason, some people think they don’t like dogs. How can you not like dogs though? Sometimes people just need to have had the right experience with dogs and the story below is an example of this.
“My doggo and I are a package deal”
You and your pet are a “package deal.” If your partner doesn’t want your pet in their life, then they can’t have you.
Rescuing a pet from an ex
The person in this story knew that if they didn’t rescue their dog, their ex was going to take them to the pound. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do in that situation.
Rehoming a boyfriend
This person’s partner wanted her to get rid of their cat so HE could get a dog. What kind of dog owner would he be? Not a very good one, we wouldn’t think.
When pets win over new partners
Just because someone you are dating says they don’t like animals, doesn’t mean that will always be the case. If they love you, they will love your pets too, and that will make them as much an animal lover as you are.
Cats are more loyal than boyfriends
If your boyfriend wants you to get rid of your cat, how much do they really care about you and what’s best for you? Maybe, they don’t care very much at all and aren’t that good of a partner in other ways as well.
Don’t do it guys!
This story didn’t have a happy ending. A middle-aged man chose a new woman in his life over his dog. That’s the wrong move, dude. That dog loved you more, we promise.
You can still travel if you have a dog
Having pets does make it more difficult to travel. It can be difficult to bring pets with you and it’s hard for them when you are away, even if you get the best pet sitter or boarding situation. It’s not impossible, though, and it’s not a reason to abandon your pet.
Your friends will lose respect for you
In the below story, someone details when their roommate chose their partner over their pets. The roommate never looked at them the same way again because they had lost so much respect for them.
Didn’t like cats, dumped her over Snapchat
The kind of people who are willing to give their partner’s ultimatums to get rid of their pets are the same type of people who break-up with others over Snapchat.
“I’m breaking up with you but I would like you to take my dog”
The woman in this story broke up with her partner because he paid too much attention to his dog. When she could no longer take care of her dog, however, she at least had the good sense to call him.
“I’m going to move in and you are going to get rid of the cats”
In this story, the person just decided they were going to move in and that their partner would get rid of their cats. There are quite a few red flags flying here.
After 2-3 dates, this guy wanted her to get rid of her dog
There’s never a good time to ask someone to get rid of their pet, but after 2-3 dates is mind-bendingly ridiculous. At least they didn’t waste any more time than that, however.
You will end up regretting it
If you give up a pet for a partner and the relationship goes sour, you will never forgive yourself for it. You might still feel that way even if you and your partner stay together.
“He’s not my man then”
If you love having the dog in your bed and your partner loves you then they will also love having the dog in the bed. If they don’t, then they are not the partner for you!
This one is just straight up ridiculous
Welp, someone actually thought that it was okay to give their partner an ultimatum about their SERVICE DOG! If someone gives you this ultimatum, the relationship is over. You do not need to inform your partner that the relationship is over, it just is. Just get up, walk away, and never talk to that person again.
Partner won’t let wife give away her dog
Check out this awesome guy! The dog wasn’t getting along with him very well and the woman gave the dog away to a shelter. The guy went and picked that dog right back up from the shelter because that’s not how you treat animals.
