For many people, horses are seen as an incredibly majestic animal with their natural strength and athleticism. They truly are a beautiful animal, but few understand just how diverse their appearances can be.

I’ve seen a lot of horses in my time, in all kinds of colors and sizes – but none quite like a ‘curly’.

Yes, these are actual horses that actually exist.

Obviously, these adorable creatures often referred to as ‘curlies’ get their name from their signature curly locks.

It comes from a special gene in their body that not only gives them curly hair, but also makes their hairs hypoallergenic (a bonus for hayfever prone or asthmatic horse owners!).

Curlies’ thick and cuddly coats make them well-suited to snowy weather so they are far more common in places with colder climates.

Though you may never have herd of them before, they’ve actually been around for a very long time.

They have been featured in Chinese artwork dated back as far as 161 AD and spotted in South America in the 19th century. Sioux Indians held curlies to a high regard, reserved as transportation horse for chiefs and medicine men. Their origin is still heavily contested among experts.
